What Type of Paint Is Best for Each Room? A Room-by-Room Guide

Not every room in your home asks the same thing of your paint. Kitchen walls need to stand up to splashes, grease, and frequent cleaning. Bathrooms have to deal with moisture and humidity. Hallways get bumped and touched constantly, while bedrooms generally see much less wear. Then there are ceilings, doors, trim, cabinets, and all the other surfaces that need their own consideration.
So, what type of paint is best for each room in your home?
The answer comes down to balancing durability, washability, moisture resistance, appearance, and the condition of the surface you're painting. At Norby Painting, we have more than 40 years of painting experience and use premium Sherwin-Williams products for our interior painting projects. Here are our recommendations for choosing the right paint throughout your home.
First: Does Every Room Need a Different Paint?
Not necessarily. You can use the same high-quality interior paint throughout much of your home. What may change from room to room is the paint sheen.
Sheen describes how much light reflects from the painted surface. Generally, lower-sheen finishes provide a softer appearance and help disguise imperfections, while higher-sheen finishes tend to provide greater durability and washability. If you're not familiar with the differences between flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss, we've covered those in detail in our Homeowner's Guide to Paint Finishes.
For this guide, we're approaching the decision from the opposite direction: you tell us which room you're painting, and we'll tell you what we'd recommend.

What Is the Best Paint for a Living Room?
For most living rooms, you want a paint that looks beautiful while still being practical enough for everyday life.
Our go-to choice for interior walls is Sherwin-Williams Duration Home®. It offers excellent durability and washability, making it well suited to main living areas. For sheen, the best choice depends somewhat on how your family uses the room.
Matte is a beautiful option if you want a soft, modern appearance with very little reflection. It's particularly appealing in living rooms with lots of natural light, where a shinier finish may reflect more light than you'd like. Eggshell or a similar low-sheen finish is another excellent option for living spaces, particularly in busy households where walls may need to be wiped down more regularly. For many homeowners, this is the sweet spot: a sophisticated finish without sacrificing practicality.
Our recommendation: Duration Home in matte or a low-sheen finish, depending on your household and the condition of the walls.

What Is the Best Paint for a Kitchen?
Kitchens need a little more durability.
Think about everything that happens around your kitchen walls: cooking, food splatters, steam, spills, fingerprints, chairs brushing against walls, kids running through the room, and regular cleaning.
This isn't usually where we would prioritize the lowest-sheen, least-washable finish.
Instead, you want something that can stand up to everyday life and clean easily.
A satin finish is an excellent option for many kitchen walls. It provides added durability and washability without looking excessively shiny. Duration Home is one of our favourite products for kitchens because it's designed to handle the realities of a busy household.
And remember that kitchen walls and kitchen cabinets are two completely different surfaces. Your cabinets require a much harder, more specialized coating, which we'll get to below.
Our recommendation: Duration Home in satin for a durable, easy-to-maintain kitchen.

What Is the Best Paint for a Bathroom?
Bathrooms introduce another challenge: moisture. Hot showers and baths can create a humid environment, so choosing a quality product matters.
For most bathrooms, we like a durable, washable interior paint in satin. It provides a smooth finish while being practical for a room that regularly experiences moisture and cleaning.
Proper ventilation is important too. Paint is part of the equation, but it can't correct an underlying moisture or ventilation problem.
If you're repainting a bathroom because the existing coating is peeling, bubbling, or showing signs of recurring mildew, it's worth determining why before simply adding another coat of paint.
Our recommendation: A premium, durable interior paint such as Duration Home in satin.

What Is the Best Paint for a Bedroom?
Bedrooms give you a little more freedom.
Because adult bedrooms are generally lower-traffic spaces, you don't need to prioritize maximum washability in the same way you would for a kitchen, bathroom, hallway, or entryway. That makes bedrooms an ideal place for softer finishes.
Flat, matte, or low-sheen finishes can all work beautifully, depending on your preference and the condition of your walls.
Matte is one of our favourites because it creates a smooth, modern appearance without much reflection. Lower-sheen finishes can also be forgiving on walls with minor imperfections.
If you prefer a little more washability or have children or pets regularly coming into the room, you can move up in sheen without sacrificing a beautiful finish.
Our recommendation: Duration Home in flat or matte for a soft bedroom finish, with satin also being a great option when added durability is preferred.

What Is the Best Paint for a Child's Bedroom?
This is where we'd make a distinction between an adult bedroom and a child's bedroom. Kids' rooms tend to see a lot more action. Fingerprints, toys, markers, furniture, crafts, spills, and general everyday wear mean these walls may need to be cleaned more frequently. Washability becomes much more important.
We still want the room to feel warm and comfortable, so you don't necessarily need an extremely glossy finish. A premium washable paint gives you more flexibility. Satin is a practical option because it provides increased durability while maintaining a relatively subtle appearance. This is also where investing in good-quality paint can really pay off. Being able to wipe down the wall rather than repainting every time life happens is a major advantage.
Our recommendation: Duration Home in satin for busy children's bedrooms and play spaces.

What Is the Best Paint for Hallways and Entryways?
Hallways might be one of the hardest-working painted surfaces in your home.
People brush against the walls. Hands touch corners. Shoes, bags, furniture, pets, and vacuum cleaners all seem to find them eventually.
Entryways have similar challenges, especially in busy households.
For these areas, durability and washability should be near the top of your list.
We generally recommend a durable product with enough sheen to make regular cleaning easier. Satin works particularly well for many high-traffic spaces. If your hallway walls have a lot of existing imperfections, however, remember that increasing the sheen can make some flaws more noticeable. Good surface preparation becomes particularly important.
Our recommendation: Duration Home in satin for a durable finish that can handle high-traffic areas.

What Is the Best Paint for a Dining Room?
Dining rooms can go in either direction.
If yours is a formal space that's only used occasionally, you can prioritize appearance and choose a soft matte or low-sheen finish.
If your dining room is where your family eats every night, does homework, works on crafts, hosts friends, and occasionally launches a forkful of spaghetti at the wall, durability becomes much more important. For a formal dining room, we love the elegant appearance of matte. For an everyday family dining space, we'd lean toward a more washable finish.
Our recommendation: Matte for lower-traffic formal dining rooms or satin for busy family dining spaces.

What Is the Best Paint for a Home Office?
Home offices usually don't experience the same wear as kitchens, bathrooms, or hallways. That means you can choose your paint largely based on the look you want. Matte is an excellent option because it creates a sophisticated, low-reflection backdrop. That's particularly nice if you're spending a lot of time on video calls or have natural light coming through nearby windows. A durable premium interior paint still makes sense, especially if you're planning to keep the colour for years.
Our recommendation: Duration Home in matte for a smooth, professional-looking home office.

What Is the Best Paint for a Laundry Room?
Laundry rooms are easy to overlook, but they're working spaces. Depending on the room, you may be dealing with humidity, splashes, cleaning products, baskets bumping against walls, and frequent traffic.
We'd approach the laundry room more like a kitchen than a bedroom. Choose a paint that's durable and easy to clean. A satin finish is a practical choice for most laundry rooms. If the room has poor ventilation or an existing moisture issue, address that as well rather than expecting paint to solve the problem.
Our recommendation: Duration Home in satin.

What Is the Best Paint for a Basement?
Basements vary significantly, so there isn't a universal answer. A finished, dry basement used as a family room can be treated much like any other living space. Matte or a low-sheen finish can look fantastic. A high-traffic basement used as a playroom or recreation room may benefit from the extra washability of satin.
Most importantly, don't use paint to cover up a moisture problem. If you notice dampness, staining, peeling coatings, or recurring moisture, determine what's causing it before repainting. The best paint in the world can't compensate for an unresolved water issue behind the wall.
Our recommendation: Choose the sheen based on how the finished space is used, but investigate any moisture issues before painting.

What Is the Best Paint for Ceilings?
Ceilings have different needs than walls.
They aren't regularly touched or cleaned, so durability isn't usually the priority. Instead, we want an even finish that minimizes reflection and helps disguise minor surface imperfections.
That's why flat paint remains our preferred ceiling finish. We commonly use Sherwin-Williams Painter's Edge® Interior Latex for ceiling applications. It provides reliable coverage and a smooth, uniform appearance. Keeping the ceiling flat also creates a subtle contrast when the walls are painted in a slightly higher sheen.
Our recommendation: Painter's Edge Interior Latex in flat.

What Is the Best Paint for Trim and Baseboards?
Your baseboards may take more abuse than almost anything else you paint. Shoes kick them. Vacuums bump them. Furniture rubs against them. They collect dirt and dust and need to be wiped down. Trim therefore needs a finish that's considerably more durable than what you might choose for a bedroom wall.
One of our preferred products is Sherwin-Williams Emerald® Urethane Trim Enamel.
It's specifically well suited to surfaces where you want a smooth, hard-wearing finish. For trim, we typically recommend satin or semi-gloss depending on the desired appearance. Semi-gloss creates a more noticeable contrast between the walls and trim, while satin provides a slightly softer look.
Our recommendation: Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel in satin or semi-gloss.

What Is the Best Paint for Interior Doors?
Interior doors have similar requirements to trim. They're constantly being touched, opened, closed, bumped, and cleaned. Around the handle in particular, you'll quickly discover why washability matters. Again, Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel is an excellent choice because of its durable, smooth finish. Using the same product and sheen across your doors and trim can also help create a consistent look throughout the house.
Our recommendation: Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel in satin or semi-gloss.

What Is the Best Paint for Kitchen Cabinets?
Your kitchen cabinets should not simply be painted with leftover wall paint.
Cabinets are one of the most demanding painted surfaces in the house. They're touched constantly and exposed to grease, moisture, spills, cleaning, and repeated opening and closing. Creating a durable cabinet finish requires the right preparation, application process, and coating.
For professional cabinet painting, we commonly recommend Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. It creates a smooth, durable finish that is much better suited to cabinetry than standard wall paint. We most commonly choose semi-gloss, although satin can also be used depending on the look the homeowner wants.
Preparation is especially important with cabinetry. A premium coating applied over an improperly prepared cabinet isn't going to produce the same result as a professionally prepared and finished surface.
Our recommendation: Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel, typically in semi-gloss.
Should You Use the Same Paint Sheen Throughout Your Whole House?
You can, but you don't have to. In fact, using a few carefully selected finishes throughout the home often makes more sense.
For example, you might choose:
Matte for adult bedrooms and a home office
Satin for kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, and children's rooms
Flat for ceilings
Satin or semi-gloss for doors and trim
That creates consistency without ignoring the different demands placed on each surface. You also don't need to make these decisions based purely on traditional rules. Modern premium paints offer better performance than many older products, giving homeowners more flexibility when choosing a finish. The important thing is finding the right combination of appearance, durability, washability, and surface condition.
Is Expensive Paint Worth It?
For many interior projects, investing in a premium paint makes sense. Paint is only one part of the total cost of a professional painting project. Preparation and labour are significant parts of the job, so using a product that provides excellent durability, coverage, and washability can help protect that investment.
This is one reason Duration Home is one of our most frequently recommended interior paints. For homeowners who want Sherwin-Williams' premium interior option, Emerald® Interior Acrylic Latex is another excellent choice, offering beautiful coverage, colour depth, stain resistance, and a smooth finished appearance.
The "best" paint isn't necessarily the most expensive product available. It's the product that makes sense for the surface, room, household, and result you're trying to achieve.
What Paint Does Norby Painting Recommend?
There isn't one can of paint that we'd recommend for every surface in your home.
That's the point. We select products based on where they're being used and what they'll need to withstand.
For many Charlotte-area homes, our interior recommendations commonly include:
Interior walls: Sherwin-Williams Duration Home
Premium interior option: Sherwin-Williams Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex
Trim and doors: Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel
Ceilings: Sherwin-Williams Painter's Edge Interior Latex
Kitchen cabinets: Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel
Then we select the sheen based on the room, surface, desired appearance, and level of durability needed.
